Evacuation of Celebrity Apex continues as 217 crew members test positive for Covid-19

The ARS, Agence Régionale de Santé (Regional Health Agency) des Pays-de-la-Loire, has provided an update on the Covid-19 situation aboard Celebrity Apex.

Almost two weeks ago the ARS – Regional Health Agency of Pays-de-la-Loire – announced seven people aboard Celebrity Apex had tested positive for Covid-19. The seven were among the crew members who boarded Celebrity Apex two weeks earlier. The people who tested positive remained on board while measures were taken to prevent the virus from spreading through the air conditioning and a repatriation operation – to bring crew members back to their homes – was organized.

Earlier today the Regional Health Agency announced more than 300 people have already left the ship. Earlier this week two people had been hospitalized. Four others were later sent to hospital, two of whom were placed in intensive care. Of the 1,460 people on board, 217 people tested positive for Covid-19.

The 306-meter long Celebrity Apex can accommodate 2,900 passengers and some 1,400 crew members (from 67 different nationalities). The vessel was delivered to Celebrity Cruises on March 27. The ship’s first sailing is scheduled out of Barcelona on May 20th, 2020.
