Anyone who has sailed aboard Queen Mary 2 during a transatlantic crossing will understand understand that the ship occupies a position unlike almost any other vessel at sea. As Cunard‘s flagship and the only ocean liner in the world still offering regularly scheduled crossings between Southampton and New York, she has become an icon of modern ocean travel. Now, however, another important chapter lies ahead.
Cunard has announced plans for an extensive refurbishment of Queen Mary 2, covering both the accommodation and a range of public areas throughout the ship. At the same time, the British cruise line is determined to preserve the distinctive Art Deco identity that has made Queen Mary 2 so recognisable. Rather than reinventing the ship, Cunard intends to build on the qualities that have made her unique.
The work will begin on March 31, 2027, when Queen Mary 2 enters dry dock at Damen Shiprepair Brest in France. She is scheduled to return to service on May 9, 2027.
New Suites and Refreshed Public Spaces
A total of 31 new staterooms will be added during the refurbishment. Sixteen will be new Princess Grill Suites, while the remaining 15 will be in the Britannia category.
The existing Grill Suites will also undergo a significant refresh, with new interiors, furnishings and finishes. Bathrooms across all Grill Suite categories will be redesigned, introducing an elegant new look together with premium features inspired by luxury spas.
The Queens Grill and Princess Grill restaurants will also be refreshed. Cunard intends to retain the sense of space, comfort and exclusivity associated with both restaurants while giving them a renewed appearance.

Additional outdoor deck space will give guests more opportunities to relax, watch the sunset or simply enjoy the sea air. Classic deck games will remain part of the Queen Mary 2 experience, while paddle tennis and pickleball will also continue to be available.
One of the ship’s most distinctive facilities is also included in the plans. Queen Mary 2 is the only ocean liner in the world with dedicated kennels for pets, allowing passengers to take their animals with them on a Transatlantic Crossing.
The kennels will be redesigned and capacity will be increased. The owners’ lounge will also be refurbished, while the outdoor walking area will be expanded. The changes are intended to further improve the experience for passengers travelling across the Atlantic with their pets.
Wellness, Shopping and Entertainment
Mareel Wellness & Beauty will be completely transformed as part of the refurbishment. The new space is designed to provide a contemporary environment where guests can relax, restore and recharge.
The shopping experience will also be expanded through the introduction of a new collection of luxury stores. Cunard is aiming for a more boutique-style retail environment that reflects the overall character of the ship.
The cultural and entertainment offering will receive attention as well. Illuminations, described by Cunard as the largest planetarium at sea, will receive a major digital upgrade designed to create more immersive and advanced experiences beneath its dome.
The Royal Court Theatre will continue to play a central role in the entertainment programme, hosting productions from London’s West End and Broadway.
Cunard’s award-winning Insights programme will also remain part of the experience. The programme brings notable speakers and cultural figures on board, offering guests the opportunity to hear from people with expertise across a broad range of subjects.
A New Design That Respects the Past
The refurbishment will introduce plenty of changes, but Cunard has no intention of abandoning the distinctive appearance of Queen Mary 2. The design vision is being led by Chris Finch, one of the ship’s original designers.
His approach combines the cinematic glamour of classic Hollywood with the refinement, British heritage and traditions that have long been associated with Cunard. The aim is to create a ship that feels renewed while remaining instantly recognisable as Queen Mary 2.

Cunard has also partnered with acclaimed illustrator Tanu Vasu, who is creating a bespoke collection of illustrations to capture the vision for the refurbished ship.
Vasu is known for her work with heritage and luxury brands, but the project also has a personal meaning for her. Growing up in Australia, she remembers watching Cunard ships arrive in port and being struck by their scale and presence.
She believes illustration offers a more human way of communicating a design than digital renderings alone. Through her work, she aims to capture not just the design of Queen Mary 2, but also the elegance, sense of occasion and enduring feeling of wonder associated with travelling on an ocean liner.
Investing in the Future
The refurbishment follows a landmark year for Queen Mary 2. The ship took centre stage in New York Harbor during Sail 4th 250, a major event forming part of the celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.
For Cunard, the investment underlines the continuing importance of Queen Mary 2 to the cruise line. The ship is more than simply another member of the fleet; she represents a form of ocean travel that has almost disappeared.
Cunard President Katie McAlister describes Queen Mary 2 as more than a ship and emphasises her position as an icon of modern luxury travel and the world’s only true ocean liner. She says the refurbishment represents a significant investment and that every decision has been approached with respect for the ship’s heritage, character and the sense of occasion associated with Queen Mary 2.
The intention, according to McAlister, is not to reinvent what guests already love about the ship, but to refine those qualities for the future.
When Queen Mary 2 returns to service on May 9, 2027, she will therefore be renewed in many respects while retaining her essential character. Her role will remain unique: she will continue to offer the classic Transatlantic journey between Europe and North America in a way that no other ship in the world can replicate.
