Holland America Line Brings Support to One of the Planet’s Most Isolated Places

On Day 46 of Holland America Line’s current 133-day Grand World Voyage, the Volendam reached a legendary speck of land in the vast South Pacific: Pitcairn Island. Located about 1,350 miles from Tahiti and home to just 38 people, the arrival of the ship marked a rare moment of connection. During this visit, the Volendam not only welcomed nearly the entire population onboard but also provided a vital donation of fresh food to one of the most remote communities on Earth.

Pitcairn Island is a fascinating destination for long-haul cruises, yet it remains one of the most isolated inhabited places on Earth. Located 1,350 miles from Tahiti, this volcanic outcrop is famously the home of the descendants of the Bounty mutineers. With just 38 residents and no airport, the community relies on its self-sufficiency and the regular, yet weather-dependent, visits from passing ships to maintain their connection to the outside world.

Because the rugged coastline makes it impractical for guests to disembark, the islanders brought Pitcairn to the ship. A delegation of 28 residents, led by the island’s mayor, shared stories with guests about their extraordinary life in isolation. A “Curio and Craft Market” was set up on deck, featuring unique handcrafted items made by local families, allowing guests to take a piece of this remote paradise back home.

Beyond the cultural exchange, Holland America Line offered tangible support where it was needed most. Hotel General Manager Florin Dragomir coordinated a significant donation of fresh provisions, including milk, meat, and eggs. With supply ships visiting only about four times a year, this gesture was deeply meaningful for a community with limited access to fresh food. To commemorate the occasion, Captain Rens van Eerten participated in a plaque exchange with the mayor, while a small group of crew members went ashore to help deliver the supplies and experience the island’s untouched beauty firsthand.
