New survey data has revealed a significant surge in “intentional travel” for 2026. Travelers are increasingly moving away from high-pressure sightseeing and towards stress-free vacations characterized by flexible experiences and genuine connection.
With Wave Season in full swing, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is making it easier than ever to secure a connection-focused getaway. According to a recent YouGov survey, nearly 80% of travelers are planning more stress-free vacations in 2026. By embracing the “Joy of Missing Out” (JOMO), they are trading overpacked itineraries for presence, flexibility, and the freedom to simply enjoy the moment together.
A Mindset Shift Toward Presence
As the new year unfolds, the way we vacation is being fundamentally rethought. The survey, conducted on behalf of NCL, reveals that more than half of travelers plan to embrace more mindful and intentional travel in 2026. This reflects a growing desire to step away from “bucket-list pressure” and overpacked itineraries in favor of journeys centered around presence, flexibility, and the freedom to focus on what truly matters.

The data underscores this sentiment: in 2026, nearly 80% of respondents are planning more stress-free experiences, while 86% seek quality time away from daily distractions. Interestingly, over 60% of travelers would gladly trade a full day of sightseeing for uninterrupted rest in the comfort of their suites or staterooms. Furthermore, four out of five travelers want the flexibility to shape each day of their vacation based on how they feel in the moment.
Prioritizing Connection and Personal Fulfillment
When choosing who to travel with, people are prioritizing connection and personal fulfillment. Over 40% of respondents plan to travel with a partner or spouse for quality time together. Family travel remains a cornerstone of the industry, with 30% planning multigenerational trips, while one in ten travelers is organizing friend getaways built specifically around shared experiences and relaxation.

To turn this inspiration into action, NCL is currently offering its popular Second Guest Sails Free promotion on all cruises. This is combinable with the Free at Sea package, which delivers guest-favorite amenities, including a premium beverage package, Wi-Fi, specialty dining experiences, and shore excursion credits.
“Wave Season is the perfect moment for travelers to design a getaway that reflects who they are and what they need,” said Marc Kazlauskas, president at Norwegian Cruise Line. “Mindful and intentional travel is more than a trend; it’s a long-lasting shift toward meaningful experiences. Travelers want the freedom to design their own journey, and with NCL, every detail is curated to make that possible. ‘It’s Different Out Here’ isn’t just our brand promise – it’s how we deliver effortless escapes, true flexibility and the space to be fully present.”
Caribbean Escapes Designed for Flexibility and Ease

For those seeking a more mindful and intentional pace, NCL’s Caribbean deployment offers the ideal setting. With 18 ships sailing in the Caribbean throughout 2026, including the newest cutting-edge vessels Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Luna, guests can choose from itineraries ranging from three to 14 days, departing from 11 convenient homeports.
Extended port calls allow travelers to explore at their own leisure, while NCL’s resort-style private island destinations, Great Stirrup Cay and Harvest Caye, invite guests to unwind in secluded beachfront cabanas. New enhancements on Great Stirrup Cay provide even more ways to personalize the day, including the Great Life Lagoon, a heated pool with a family splash area, and the upcoming Great Tides Waterpark opening in summer 2026.
Explore Europe Without the Rush

Beyond the Caribbean, NCL’s Summer 2026 Europe deployment further expands opportunities for presence-driven escapes across eight ships. The upcoming season features port-immersive itineraries throughout Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Greek Isles. Many seven-day voyages feature limited or no sea days, allowing guests to immerse fully in each destination. Select sailings also include overnight stays in iconic cities like Reykjavik, Copenhagen, and Istanbul, offering ample time for late-night dining and vibrant cultural exploration.
Immersive Journeys in Alaska

In Alaska, NCL offers deeply immersive journeys from late April through October, departing from Seattle, Whittier, and Vancouver. Guests can sail aboard some of the newest ships in the region, including Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, and Norwegian Joy, each featuring expansive indoor–outdoor viewing spaces. Additionally, Norwegian Jade will sail seven-day open-jaw voyages between Vancouver and Whittier with no sea days, ideal for guests seeking an in-depth experience of the “Last Frontier.”
