In a historic maritime moment, the world’s only remaining ocean liner, Queen Mary 2, recently anchored off the coast of Long Beach to reunite with her legendary namesake, the Queen Mary. This rare rendezvous occurred during the flagship’s 2026 World Voyage, marking the first time the two vessels have met in two decades.
A Historic Connection
The meeting represents a bridge between generations of maritime excellence. The original Queen Mary, which debuted in 1936, is currently celebrating her 90th anniversary. Now a permanent cultural destination in Long Beach, the ship remains an Art Deco icon offering dining, immersive tours, and overnight accommodations.

The Queen Mary 2 debuted over 35 years after the original was retired in 1967. Underscoring the deep connection between the two, Queen Mary 2’s starboard funnel houses a fully refurbished whistle originally from the first Queen Mary, cementing a functional and symbolic link between the ships.
“This iconic rendezvous pays a powerful tribute to Cunard’s enduring legacy and the spirit of ocean travel,” said Katie McAlister, President of Cunard. “Queen Mary 2’s reunion with the original Queen Mary for the first time in 20 years reflects our past, present and future, reminding us of Cunard’s distinct connection to maritime history and the generations brought together through timeless elegance, innovation and one-of-a-kind journeys around the world.”
Milestones of the 2026 World Voyage

The reunion in Long Beach followed another significant achievement: the Queen Mary 2’s first-ever transit of the Panama Canal. Following the rendezvous, the liner made an official return to the Port of Los Angeles for an overnight stay—her first visit to the port in 17 years.

The 108-night World Voyage is the ship’s first in two years, guiding travelers to more than 30 ports of call. The itinerary spans the Americas, Australia, Asia, Africa, and Europe, featuring overnight stays in bucket-list destinations including: San Francisco, Sydney, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Cape Town.
