The shore power electrification project at the Port of La Spezia continues to progress. Following an initial test conducted in October, a second successful trial took place this week at Garibaldi Pier during the scheduled call of Costa Toscana, the flagship of Costa Cruises.
The test focused on key operational procedures, including electrical connection processes and power supply levels. Technicians from the Eastern Ligurian Sea Port Authority – Italy’s first port authority to implement cold ironing – verified the correct functioning of the shore power system and its integration with Costa Toscana via the existing infrastructure and the Cable Management System (CMS) supplied by Shore Link.

These tests are essential to confirming the technical and operational compatibility required to allow ships to switch off onboard generators while berthed, significantly reducing emissions, noise, and fuel consumption during port calls.
Roberto Alberti, SVP Chief Corporate Officer & Chief Financial Officer of Costa Cruises, stated:
“Costa Cruises reaffirms its commitment to decarbonization, with the goal of achieving a net-zero emissions fleet by 2050. This test represents an important step in improving our environmental performance during port calls. We are proud that this milestone was achieved in a Ligurian port, a national leader in innovative and sustainable technologies.”
The President of the Port Authority, Bruno Pisano, added: “As announced in October, we are continuing preparatory tests to ensure the shore power system will be fully operational for the next cruise season. Today’s successful test confirms our progress toward environmental sustainability. I thank Mont-Ele, Shore Link, and Costa Cruises for their collaboration.”
