Imagine sailing through the icy, uncharted waters of the Arctic and Antarctica, not just as a luxury traveler, but as a witness to groundbreaking scientific discovery. This is the promise of a new, landmark three-year partnership between PONANT EXPLORATIONS GROUP and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), the world’s largest independent ocean science organization. This alliance is set to redefine luxury expedition cruising by placing serious ocean research and education front and center.

For travelers passionate about the planet, this unique collaboration means more than just a spectacular view. Guests will get a front-row seat to scientific innovation in the world’s most remote regions. Already a significant contributor to global research, the luxury cruise line has hosted over 230 scientists across its fleet since 2021. Now, WHOI scientists will join select PONANT EXPLORATIONS expeditions – including voyages aboard the state-of-the-art luxury icebreaker, Le Commandant Charcot. These experts will be conducting crucial fieldwork, testing new technologies, and sharing their insights through engaging, interactive programming with guests.

This isn’t just about presence; it’s about crucial access. The partnership is a commitment to advancing knowledge, helping scientists reach polar regions that are increasingly difficult to access due to dwindling funding and research space on dedicated vessels. As Samuel Chamberlain, CEO, PONANT EXPLORATIONS GROUP Americas, notes, “By empowering scientists with access to some of the world’s most remote regions, we’re helping to deepen understanding of the planet we all share.” It reflects a shared commitment to ocean conservation and creating meaningful impact.

Antarctica Voyage: A Glimpse into the Research

The first expedition under this exciting alliance sets sail on the October 31, 2025 voyage to “The Emperor Penguins of the Weddell Sea” off the coast of Antarctica.

Aboard this sailing, guests can expect to see real science in action. WHOI glaciologist Dr. Catherine Walker, renowned for her research on ice-ocean interactions and Antarctic coastal change, will guide two WHOI-MIT Joint Program graduate students, Caroline Needell and Bailey Fluegel. Their mission? To use LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology – a first for the ship – to model the breakup rate of the Antarctic Ice Sheet.

Le Commandant Charcot is the world’s only passenger ship with Polar Class 2 (PC-2) certification, capable of safely navigating shifting glaciers and uncharted ice floes, making it the perfect platform for this critical data collection. Since the data gathered from close-up measurements of ice cliffs and glacier edges is nearly impossible to get by satellite, the insights gained are essential to understanding the rate of change in sea level rise and the evolution of the ice sheet.

Guests won’t just be observers; they’ll be an educated participant. Throughout the voyage, guests will have the unparalleled opportunity to:

  • Observe the research process firsthand as scientists deploy cutting-edge technology.
  • Visit the ship’s wet and dry laboratories – the nerve center of the scientific work.
  • Participate in enriching educational presentations about Antarctica’s history, global climate significance, and fragile ecosystems.

As Dr. Walker emphasizes, this partnership is a chance to “empower guests with knowledge and inspiration to take home from their adventure.” It’s an opportunity to travel with a purpose, knowing your journey supports critical research that is accelerating lasting change and global awareness in ocean conservation. Future WHOI expeditions, research projects, and educational programs will be announced in the coming months, continuing to unite exploration, research, and responsible travel.
