Holland America Recycles Old Carpets into Souvenir Coasters

Holland America Line is giving cruise guests the chance to take home a sustainable keepsake with the launch of a unique retail item: a set of four eco-friendly coasters made from upcycled carpet once used on board several ships.

Created in partnership with Danish carpet manufacturer Dansk Wilton, the coasters mark the first time recycled carpet products are available for purchase in the cruise industry. Sold exclusively in Holland America Line’s onboard shops, the coasters highlight the brand’s dedication to sustainable cruise practices and innovative recycling.

“This project reflects our ongoing journey toward more sustainable practices,” said My Nguyen, director of interior design at Holland America Line. “These coasters are a tangible example of how discarded resources can be given a second life in the very environment they came from. We are proud to be the first in the industry to partner with Dansk and innovate carpet waste into beautiful usable products that our guests can enjoy.”

To date, more than 12,000 coasters have been produced from 3,300 pounds of carpet collected during dry-dock refurbishments on Oosterdam, Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam over the past two years. Each coaster is made with Dansk Wilton’s ReBond material, the same upcycled textile also used in Holland America Line’s architectural signage, demonstrating how circular design can reduce waste while creating meaningful souvenirs.

The coasters are part of Dansk’s Re:Shape initiative, a design program that focuses on repurposing carpet waste into useful, sustainable products. Holland America Line and Dansk Wilton are also exploring future items such as notebooks, postcards, door signs, artwork and other retail souvenirs created from recycled cruise ship carpets.

The limited-edition coasters will be available fleetwide in Holland America Line’s onboard retail shops by October 2025, offering guests not only a memorable cruise souvenir but also the opportunity to support sustainable innovation at sea.
