British luxury cruise line Cunard celebrated a landmark moment as Queen Mary 2, the world’s only ocean liner, took centre stage in New York Harbor during Sail4th 250, the flagship event of the United States’ 250th Independence Day celebrations.
Anchored in a prime location, Queen Mary 2 offered guests front-row views of one of the most spectacular Fourth of July celebrations ever held in New York City. The event featured the largest gathering of tall ships and naval vessels in the city’s history.

Queen Mary 2 Offers the Best View of Sail4th 250
The highlight of the day was the International Parade of Sail, which saw more than 100 vessels sail through New York Harbor. The impressive flotilla included 47 tall ships representing 20 nations, sailing from the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge past the Statue of Liberty before continuing along the Hudson River to the George Washington Bridge.
Guests aboard Queen Mary 2 also witnessed the International Naval Review, during which a U.S. Navy vessel formally acknowledged a fleet of 37 American and allied naval ships.
The celebrations continued with a spectacular military flypast led by the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels. More than 150 aircraft participated, including the RAF Red Arrows, before the evening concluded with a breathtaking fireworks display illuminating the Manhattan skyline.

Cunard’s Historic Transatlantic Connection
The celebrations carried extra meaning for Cunard, as 4 July marks the anniversary of the company’s very first transatlantic crossing.
On 4 July 1840, RMS Britannia, Cunard’s first ship, departed Liverpool for Boston, launching the world’s first regularly scheduled transatlantic steamship service. The voyage transformed travel, trade and communication between Britain and the United States, beginning a connection that has continued uninterrupted ever since.
Between 1840 and 1923, an estimated one in five immigrants travelling to North America arrived aboard a Cunard ship, making the company an important part of American history and helping shape generations of families.
New York and Cunard: A Maritime Legacy
New York has always played a central role in Cunard’s story. The cruise line first arrived in New York Harbor in December 1847 when the wooden paddle steamer Hibernia sailed into port, greeted by crowds along the waterfront.
Since then, Cunard has celebrated several historic milestones in the city. In 2008, the famous Three Queens event brought together Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth 2 and Queen Victoria in New York Harbor, a remarkable gathering that was repeated in 2011.
Today, Cunard continues to maintain one of the longest-running relationships with the Port of New York, having called there every year since 1847—more than 178 years and longer than any other port in the company’s history.
