Under a radiant spring sun, the official christening ceremony of Emerald Astra, the newest luxury river cruise ship from Emerald Cruises, took place on Sunday, 31 May at Amsterdam’s cruise terminal. Guests from the international cruise and travel industry gathered at the Veemkade to witness this special maritime tradition.
The ceremony marked an important milestone for Scenic Group and Emerald Cruises, which see Emerald Astra as the beginning of a new chapter in modern river cruising. The vessel combines contemporary luxury, innovative design and a refined guest experience that perfectly matches the expectations of today’s river cruise traveller.
Christening by Toni Lanotte-Day
During the ceremony, Glen Moroney, Founder and Chairman of Scenic Group, addressed the guests. In his speech, he highlighted the group’s continued investments in innovation, sustainability and premium river cruise experiences.
“Emerald Astra reflects our vision for the global growth of the Emerald Cruises brand. Contemporary, immersive and closely connected to the destinations we sail,” said Moroney. “By appointing Toni as godmother, we recognise the important role travel advisors have played in building Scenic Group and the role they will continue to play in shaping our future.”

Captain Matija Sveric also addressed those in attendance. He thanked, among others, Milembe Mateyo, Harbour Master of Port of Amsterdam, and Monic van der Heyden, Commercial Director of Port of Amsterdam, for the warm welcome extended to the ship in the Dutch capital. As a gesture of appreciation, several gifts were exchanged, including an official commemorative plaque marking Emerald Astra’s first visit to the Port of Amsterdam.
The honour of officially christening the ship was entrusted to Toni Lanotte-Day, a US travel advisor, entrepreneur and one of Scenic Group’s top-performing global sellers. Her appointment as godmother reflects a broader industry trend: the growing influence of travel advisors in shaping and developing modern luxury travel brands.

As godmother, Lanotte-Day described her role as both symbolic and representative of the wider travel advisor community.
“In maritime tradition, a godmother represents luck, protection and prosperous journeys ahead,” she said. “But I also see it as representing the travel advisors who believe in this product and help bring it to life for their clients.”
For Lanotte-Day, the connection with Emerald Cruises is not defined by a title, but by lived experiences. From hosting tulip cruises through the Netherlands, where guests painted wooden clogs alongside local artisans, to organising sunrise events upon arrival in Venice, complete with Bellini cocktails served on deck as the city comes into view, her relationship with the brand has been built around exactly those memorable moments that Emerald Cruises aims to create.

The introduction of Emerald Astra further reflects that evolution. With its sleek exterior and bright, contemporary interiors inspired by Scenic Group’s in-house shipbuilding division, MKM Yachts, the vessel introduces a new design direction. According to Lanotte-Day, the goal is to evoke a sense of “relaxed joy” from the moment guests step on board.

“This ship is designed for travellers who want to truly experience a destination, whether through history, culture or active exploration, while still returning to a space that feels like home,” she added.
As godmother, she offered her best wishes for the ship, its crew and the future guests who will enjoy unforgettable journeys on board. Following centuries-old maritime tradition, Emerald Astra was then officially christened, symbolically taking her place within the Emerald Cruises fleet.
Celebratory Reception On Board
Following the official ceremony at the Veemkade, guests were invited to a reception in the ship’s elegant lounge. There, a toast was raised to the future of Emerald Astra while guests enjoyed a selection of culinary bites and refreshments.

One of the highlights of the reception was the impressive commemorative cake specially created by the onboard culinary team to celebrate the christening. The festive creation provided a fitting conclusion to a successful ceremony centred around tradition, innovation and hospitality.
A New Era for River Cruising
Emerald Astra represents the latest generation within the successful Emerald Star-Ship fleet. The vessel makes its debut on the Danube this season and stands out thanks to a contemporary interior concept that feels closer to a modern boutique hotel than a traditional river cruise ship.

On board, guests will find luxurious suites and staterooms with premium amenities, carefully curated artworks, exclusive design touches and elevated comfort throughout the ship. In addition, Emerald Astra becomes the first vessel within the Emerald fleet to introduce complimentary guest laundry facilities.
With its refined styling, innovative features and focus on contemporary luxury, Emerald Astra marks an important step in the continued development of Emerald Cruises. The festive christening in Amsterdam therefore not only celebrates the official start of its journey on Europe’s rivers, but also signals the arrival of a new benchmark in luxury river cruising.
