What began in 1986 as a modest local tour on the southern coast of Australia has evolved into a global pioneer in luxury cruising. As Scenic Group prepares for its 40th anniversary, we look back on four decades of innovation at Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours and Emerald Cruises. These two premier brands share a passion for quality, yet each possesses a unique character that transports travelers to all seven continents.
The Roots of a Global Player
The story of the Scenic Group began exactly forty years ago under the name Warrnambool Scenic Tours. The first trips took travelers along the rugged beauty of the iconic Great Ocean Road. The personal approach quickly proved to be a success, and by 1992, the operation had expanded to include luxurious land journeys throughout Australia and New Zealand. In 1999, the group stepped onto the international stage as a leading tour operator for travels to Canada, Alaska, Africa, and South America. This formed the foundation of an empire that would later conquer the world’s oceans and the most remote corners of the planet.

The true revolution on the water started in 2006 when the group introduced its first river cruises in Europe by chartering vessels. This experience left them wanting more, and in 2008, the group took the bold step of becoming its own cruise line, building the innovative Space-Ships for Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours. Today, Scenic is the absolute benchmark with thirteen ships in Europe, but their ambition soon reached far beyond the European Rhine or Danube.
Emerald Cruises: Modern Luxury on Global Waterways

While Scenic was setting new standards in the ultra-luxury segment, Emerald Cruises was founded in 2013. The brand had a clear mission: to make luxury cruises accessible to a new generation of travelers who appreciate modern design and an active lifestyle. The start was immediately iconic when, in 2014, the first ‘Star-Ship’, the Emerald Sky, was christened in Amsterdam by style icon Twiggy. Emerald Cruises quickly grew into an award-winning operator, dominating not only European rivers but also expanding into Southeast Asia and the world’s oceans. The brand distinguishes itself through a fresh, contemporary atmosphere and clever spatial solutions, lowering the threshold for a luxury cruise vacation without compromising on the quality for which the group is renowned.
Scenic vs. Emerald Cruises: The Art of Choice

Although both brands sail under the Scenic Group flag and maintain the same high standards, there are clear differences that guide a traveler’s choice. This starts with the concept of ‘All-Inclusive.’ Scenic maintains a strict ‘Truly All-Inclusive’ policy. From premium drinks in the minibar and personal butler service for every suite to gratuities and every conceivable excursion: the wallet never needs to leave the suite. Emerald Cruises, on the other hand, chooses a ‘Deluxe’ approach where a great deal is included -such as meals, wine and beer with lunch and dinner, and a wide selection of excursions – but where guests have more freedom to add extras according to their own wishes and budget.

The atmosphere and design on board also offer a clear contrast. A Scenic Space-Ship provides classical elegance and tranquility. The ships are designed as floating five-star hotels where service is perfected down to the smallest detail. In contrast, Emerald Cruises feels like a hip boutique hotel. The decor is sleeker and more modern, with an abundance of light and glass. A striking example of this innovative design is the indoor pool on the Star-Ships. During the day, it is a serene spot for relaxation, but in the evening, the space transforms into a cozy cinema thanks to an ingenious retractable floor. Furthermore, the focus on activity differs: Emerald Cruises emphasizes vitality with its EmeraldACTIVE program and dedicated Activity Managers, while Scenic focuses on deep cultural immersion and ultimate well-being in its renowned Salt Therapy Lounges.
From the Mekong to the Glaciers of Antarctica
The innovative power of the Scenic Group is not limited to Europe. In 2016, the group set a new standard for river cruises in Southeast Asia. With the launch of the Scenic Spirit on the Mekong and the Scenic Aura on the Irrawaddy in Myanmar, a level of luxury was introduced that had not yet existed in the region. Emerald Cruises followed suit with the Emerald Harmony, a ship specifically built with a shallow draft to sail into the heart of Ho Chi Minh City – a feat that larger ships cannot match.

In 2019, the group definitively changed the maritime world with the launch of the Scenic Eclipse, the world’s first Discovery Yacht. This ship made it possible to explore the furthest reaches of the Arctic and Antarctic regions without sacrificing six-star luxury. With two helicopters and a submarine on board, guests can admire glaciers from above or explore the mysterious underwater world of the polar seas. In 2023, the Scenic Eclipse II followed, christened by astronaut Dr. Kathy Sullivan. The versatility of these ships is unprecedented: from the icy waters of East Antarctica to the tropical archipelagos of Indonesia and the rugged Kimberley coast in Australia. It was a symbolic moment in 2024 when the Scenic Eclipse II docked in Newcastle – the very place where it all began for the Scenic Group forty years ago.
Ocean Expansion

Emerald Cruises did not stay behind on the seas and launched the groundbreaking luxury yachts Emerald Azzurra and Emerald Sakara. These superyachts are more compact and agile than traditional cruise ships. This allows them unique access to fascinating ports in the Mediterranean, the Adriatic, the Red Sea, and the Caribbean where only small yachts can go. The yachts feature an outdoor infinity pool and a marina platform at the stern, from which guests can jump directly into the turquoise waters of the Seychelles or the Indian Ocean for a swim or a trip in the available kayaks.
The Path to 2028: A Global Future
Today, the Scenic Group looks resolutely forward to a new growth spurt that will further expand its global footprint. The fleet expansion through 2028 is ambitious, taking guests to over 100 countries. In 2026, Emerald will launch the Emerald Kaia, the next generation of superyacht, which will further refine the luxury experience on the oceans with an even larger marina platform and expanded wellness facilities. While the Emerald Lumi will conquer the Seine in 2027, all eyes in 2028 will be on the Emerald Xara and Scenic’s new crown jewel: the Scenic Ikon.
Ikon will redefine the ultra-luxury experience at sea, from the Mediterranean to the icy splendor of Antarctica, with state-of-the-art technology and immersive explorations. After forty years of expertise, the Scenic Group continues to prove that their passion for discovery knows no bounds. Whether you choose the understated luxury of Scenic or the vibrant atmosphere of Emerald Cruises, you are choosing a journey where every detail is perfect, and every cabin or suite offers a window to the most breathtaking destinations in the world.
