A few hours in Koper…

The Slovenian city of Koper was the first port of call on our recent cruise with Rhapsody of the Seas.

As it was our first visit to Koper we decided to just walk around and see what the city has to offer. Upon arriving we walked out of the dock and took the elevator to reach the city which is located on a higher level. After walking a few minutes we were in Tito Square, the center of the old city.

Rising above the square is The Bell Tower of Koper Cathedral.

On the other side of Tito Square stands the Praetorian Palace. The Venetian style palace houses the Koper city government, a wedding hall and the tourist office with free Wi-Fi.

We walked through the passage underneath the Praetorian Palace ending up in a small street filled with shops and restaurants. At the end of the street we turned left to arrive in Presernov Square. Of course there is a church on the square but we were more attracted to the Da Ponte Fountain.

At the other end of the square is the Muda Gate, which used to be a tollhouse station and the main city gate of Koper.

We went through the old entrance to the city and walked for about 10 minutes, past the Koper football stadion, to the Planet Tus shopping center. Afterwards we walked back to the old city and strolled through the small streets until we reached the port and our home away from home.

We’d like to end this short report of our wonderful day in Koper with a local saying “Najlepsa jutra so v Kopru” or “The most beautiful mornings are in Koper”. Let’s hope one day we’ll be able to check this out ourselves…
